EMDR Plus Therapy — Online Sessions Available Across the UK

If you're carrying the weight of past experiences that won't seem to shift — memories, reactions, or feelings that keep coming back no matter how hard you try to move on — EMDR therapy may be exactly what you need.

At Clear Paths Therapy, we offer EMDR Plus: an enhanced form of one of the most effective, evidence-based therapeutic approaches available today. Sessions are delivered fully online, meaning you can access specialist support from the comfort of your own home, wherever you are in the UK.

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing. It is a structured, evidence-based therapy that was originally developed to treat trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and has since been found effective for a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties.

EMDR is recommended by the NHS, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a leading treatment for trauma and PTSD. It is one of the most thoroughly researched therapeutic approaches in the world, with decades of clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness.

Unlike many talking therapies, EMDR does not require you to discuss your experiences in detail. Instead, it works by helping the brain to reprocess distressing memories so that they lose their emotional intensity — allowing you to remember what happened without being overwhelmed by it.

What is EMDR Plus?

EMDR Plus is an enhanced form of standard EMDR that integrates additional therapeutic techniques to deepen and accelerate the healing process. At Clear Paths Therapy, our EMDR Plus approach draws on complementary methods alongside core EMDR protocols, creating a richer, more personalised experience for each client.

For those who have not responded fully to standard EMDR, or who are looking for a more comprehensive approach to processing trauma and difficult experiences, EMDR Plus offers an additional level of depth and effectiveness.

How Does EMDR Work?

To understand how EMDR works, it helps to understand a little about how the brain processes difficult experiences.

When something distressing happens, the brain normally processes the memory and files it away, allowing us to move forward. But sometimes — particularly with traumatic or overwhelming experiences — this natural processing gets disrupted. The memory becomes stored in a raw, unprocessed state, retaining the emotions, physical sensations, and beliefs that were present at the time. This is why certain memories can feel as vivid and distressing years later as they did in the moment.

EMDR uses a technique called bilateral stimulation — typically in the form of guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones — to activate both sides of the brain simultaneously. This mirrors what happens naturally during REM sleep, when the brain processes and consolidates memories. Through this process, distressing memories are reprocessed and integrated, losing their emotional charge while the factual memory remains intact.

The result is that clients are often able to think about previously distressing events with a sense of distance and calm — as something that happened, rather than something that is still happening.

What Can EMDR Help With?

EMDR was originally developed for trauma and PTSD, but research and clinical experience have shown it to be effective for a much wider range of conditions. At Clear Paths Therapy, EMDR Plus may be used to support clients experiencing:

Trauma and PTSD - Whether from a single traumatic event or prolonged difficult experiences, EMDR is one of the most effective approaches available for processing trauma and reducing the symptoms of PTSD — including flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and emotional numbing.

Anxiety and Panic - EMDR can help to identify and reprocess the underlying memories and beliefs that fuel anxiety, reducing its intensity and frequency over time.

Phobias - Many phobias have their roots in specific past experiences. EMDR can help to desensitise the emotional response attached to those experiences, reducing or eliminating the phobic reaction.

Depression - EMDR can be effective in addressing the negative beliefs and unprocessed experiences that often underlie depression, helping clients to shift long-held patterns of thinking and feeling.

Grief and Loss - For those struggling to process bereavement or significant loss, EMDR can help to work through the emotional complexity of grief in a supported, structured way.

Low Self-Esteem and Negative Core Beliefs - Many of the limiting beliefs we hold about ourselves — "I'm not good enough", "I'm not safe", "I don't deserve happiness" — are rooted in past experiences. EMDR works directly with these beliefs, helping to replace them with more balanced and compassionate perspectives.

Childhood Trauma and Adverse Experiences - Difficult childhood experiences can leave a lasting imprint on how we think, feel, and relate to the world. EMDR is particularly well suited to processing these early experiences in a safe and contained way.

Stress and Burnout - Accumulated stress and the emotional residue of prolonged pressure can be effectively addressed through EMDR, particularly when that stress has its roots in specific experiences or patterns.

Relationship Difficulties - Many relationship patterns and challenges are rooted in earlier experiences. EMDR can help to process the underlying memories that drive unhelpful relational patterns.

Performance Anxiety - Whether in a professional, academic, or personal context, EMDR can help to address the fears and negative beliefs that hold people back from performing at their best.

What Does an EMDR Plus Session Look Like?

EMDR Plus sessions at Clear Paths Therapy are delivered fully online via Zoom, in a calm, private, and professional setting. Sessions are 60 minutes in length, reflecting the depth of work involved.

Here is what you can typically expect:

Assessment and preparation - Before EMDR processing begins, your therapist will take time to understand your history, your goals, and what you'd like to work through. This phase is unhurried — it is important that you feel safe, informed, and ready before any processing work begins. You will be introduced to stabilisation and grounding techniques that you can use both within sessions and independently.

Target identification - Together with your therapist, you will identify the specific memories, experiences, or beliefs that are causing difficulty. These become the focus of the EMDR processing work.

Processing - Using bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements in an online setting — your therapist will guide you through the reprocessing of targeted memories. You will be asked to bring the memory to mind while following the bilateral stimulation, and to notice whatever comes up without judgment. The process is client-led and entirely within your control — you can pause or stop at any time.

Integration - At the end of each session, your therapist will ensure you feel grounded and settled before closing. Progress is reviewed, and the next steps are agreed together.

EMDR Plus integrates additional techniques at relevant points throughout this process, tailored to your individual needs and response.

Frequently Asked Questions About EMDR

Is EMDR available online? Yes. Research has shown that EMDR delivered online is as effective as in-person EMDR for the majority of clients. At Clear Paths Therapy, all sessions are delivered via Zoom in a secure, professional setting.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail? No. One of the most important aspects of EMDR is that it does not require you to discuss the details of your experience at length. The processing work happens through bilateral stimulation, not through detailed verbal disclosure. Many clients find this a significant relief.

How many sessions will I need? This varies depending on the individual, the nature of what is being worked on, and how the processing unfolds. Some clients experience significant shifts in a small number of sessions; others benefit from longer-term work. This will be discussed openly with your therapist, and reviewed as you progress.

Is EMDR safe? Yes. EMDR is a well-established, extensively researched therapeutic approach used by trained professionals worldwide. At Clear Paths Therapy, EMDR Plus is delivered by a qualified practitioner holding the EMDR Plus Practitioners Certificate. Your safety and comfort are the priority at every stage of the process.

What if I feel distressed during a session? It is normal to experience some emotional intensity during EMDR processing — this is part of the healing process. Your therapist will always ensure you have grounding and stabilisation tools available, and sessions are paced carefully to ensure you feel supported throughout. You are always in control.

Can EMDR be combined with other therapies? Yes — and at Clear Paths Therapy, it often is. Our integrative approach means that EMDR Plus may be combined with other modalities such as EFT, Clinical Hypnotherapy, or Solution Focused Therapy where this would benefit the client.
